DIY roof replacement vs. professional roofing replacement

April 15, 2018

When you’ve decided that it’s time for a new roof, there are two possible options to consider: call the professionals or do it yourself. While the DIY option might seem like the most financially feasible, there are a few things to consider before tackling the job on your own. Here are three things to consider you’re thinking about going the DIY route for your roof:

  1. If you have assisted in re-roofing a home in the past, you might be aware of the dangers that lie in the process. Because of their expertise, roofers know instinctively how to navigate the slope and pitch of a roof, even in slick conditions, and feel comfortable doing so. Most homeowners spend very little time on their roof, and just because you are comfortable with heights doesn’t equate to safely scaling the surface of a roof, especially with the occasional gust of Midwest wind and rain.
  2. Here’s a tough question: can you live with a roof that isn’t installed correctly? A roofing project is a lot like making a chocolate cake. There aren’t that many ingredients, and the individual steps seem simple enough, but if you leave something out or change up the recipe in any way, the end result isn’t going to be what you expected. While you can throw out a cake that doesn’t taste the way you thought, the same thing can’t happen if re-roofing doesn’t go as planned. You’ll have to either live with subpar results, which can damage your home, or fork over the extra money to have your home re-roofed by a professional.
  3. DIY tear-out vs. full DIY replacement. If you truly can’t afford to have a professional install your roof in its entirety, talk to a professional roofer for additional options. In some cases, there are portions of the work you can do yourself. With roofing, you might be able to tear out the old roof for a discount on the installation. This allows the most important part, the installation of the new roof, to be completed by professionals. However, talk to your roofing company before assuming they will be comfortable with this option.
